From Bilbo’s Cottage you can walk into the bustling, vibrant town of Sheringham and stoll along one of the many award-winning beaches.  The town itself is a wonderful mix of independent and mainstream shops, numerous pubs, restaurants and cafes as well as a beautiful railway station with the North Norfolk Steam Railway.  Sheringham also boasts it’s own theatre!

The beaches are an absolute haven for families and four-legged friends alike, though during the summer the beach immediately in front of the town is restricted to dogs, but you can simply carry on walking past them, joining the beach in each direction a bit further up.

We love walking from Sheringham to West Runton (check the tides before you go) but really any of the beaches between the towns are a firm favourite for your four-legged friends!

We have a few suggestions for you for eating out – though they are by no means exclusive as there are plenty of wonderful places we just haven’t had the time to try yet!

Stubby’s Pizza – This is a fantastic pizzeria which serves amazing and quite unique pizzas!  You can eat inside, or outside if you are hovering and have a doggie with you – or you can order online and take back to Bilbo’s Cottage to enjoy!

The Robin Hood pub – A cosy pub with welcoming pub food – very dog friendly!

The Two Lifeboats pub – right on the seafront, we have enjoyed a lovely Sunday roast here with our doggies!

Whelk Coppers – a super little café right on the seafront, offering a range of lovely food with beautiful views across the sea.

The Bank and Labonne – two amazing restaurants serving Indian and Nepalese food.  We have tried both and love them!

The Quarter Deck – a lovely looking café/restaurant by the railway.  We have yet to try it but it’s on the list!

The Gangway – coffee and cocktails sort of bar/restaurant.  A really lovely ambience and situated right by the railway station near the main carpark.

The Beach – From Bilbo’s Cottage you can literally walk straight down to the beach within 10 minutes, so it’s an ideal local walk or longer walk if you want to take them further.

Pretty Corner – Another idea for some nice walks in a shadier environment is heading to Pretty Corner – a name very suitable for it as it’s a delightful spot to explore and with waymarked routes.

Sheringham Country Park – this is one of our absolute favourites.  Owned and run by the National Trust, you can park here and explore the vast estate.  They do a 5km park run most Saturdays if you’re feeling fit, or simply enjoy meandering around the woodland and parkland.  There is a café open usually from 10am and a courtyard/picnic area where you can sit and enjoy your lunch.

There are numerous other walks in the area, including all the stretches of beach in the area, Fellbrigg Hall near Cromer, the Weavers Way, Beeston Bump – there are really too many to mention.  We do recommend the Ordnance Survey App which you can download very reasonably for a year and which will show you all the little (and bigger) walks of the area.

You will find so much to do just in Sheringham alone, but if you are in the mood for venturing further afield during your stay, here are our suggestions:

Weybourne – this is a beautiful country village with a café and very popular pub.  You can walk here from Sheringham along the cliff tops and it makes an ideal walking day out, combining it with some refreshments from the pub of course!  We’ve eaten at The Ship Inn before and loved it.

Blakeney – a stunning coastal village to the west of Sheringham with beautiful walks along the marshlands.  You can take boat trips out to see the seals which can be found at the sandbank at Blakeney Point.  Blakeney has pubs, cafes and a shop as well as during the summer time, some street food.

Holt – an independent market town full of art galleries, bespoke shops, pubs and cafes.  A really pretty town and well worth a visit.

Cley-next-the-sea – another pretty coastal village with delightful walks amongst the marshland, in an area of outstanding natural beauty.  A haven for bird watchers and home to the iconic Cley windmill.

Holkham – about a half an hour’s scenic drive along the coast you’ll come across Holkham and Wells which is a lovely day out.  Try parking in Holkham Hall and going for a walk around the estate, parkland and shop/cafe or parking by the seafront and exploring miles of sandy beaches.  Wells-next-the-sea is a lovely village too and well worth a visit.
